The former national security adviser to the US president has warned that the Afghan peace process will fail.
In an interview with US Today, HR McMaster said the US-backed Afghan peace process would fail because of the "high risk" of an attack on the United States, such as the September, 11 attacks.
"We have made it possible for the Taliban to be friends of peace, but in reality they want an Islamic caliphate and use it as a base for their influence," McMaster said.
He had previously said that Trump had joined hands with the Taliban and pursued an anti-Afghan policy.
He called CBS Trump's policy on Afghanistan "irrational."
McMaster also stressed that the United States must support the Afghan government and Afghan forces with a lasting commitment.
HR McMaster was Trump's national security adviser for nearly a year and then fired for disagreements with Trump.
