'Poverty rises in cities compared to rural Afghanistan'

Poverty-risesAccording to a recent study by the Afghan Ministry of Economy, this time the poverty rate in urban areas is higher than in remote areas.

The ministry said the corona outbreak in the cities had increased poverty by four percent and in remote areas where the corona did not have much impact.

Afghanistan's economy minister, Karima Hamid Faryabi, speaking at a government accountability program, said one of the main reasons for the rise in poverty this year was the corona epidemic, which has led to many jobs being cut off and traffic jams.

He predicted that given the level of population and poverty, Afghanistan would not have much economic growth in the future.

She said the country's economic growth is expected to remain at 2.5 to 3 percent next year.

But Sohrab Bahman, an adviser to the economy ministry, told the BBC that the government needed international help to sustain its economic growth.

"Next year we will have at least positive economic growth, from two-and-a-half to three percent, which means we are going back to our economy. This is an analysis of both us and our international partners." "There is no doubt that we need international assistance to reduce our losses. In addition, we are working in every possible way to sustain economic growth."

Late last year, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Afghanistan said the corona epidemic had hit the country's socio-economy and growth the hardest in the region.

According to the report, poverty in Afghanistan has risen by 17 percent since the outbreak of Corona, and that 73 percent of Afghans now face severe financial hardship.

The UNDP has called on the Afghan government to save up, improve exports and import taxes, and fight corruption.
