The Afghan president addressed the gathering via video.
Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani said in a video address to the 75th session of the UN General Assembly in New York that he wanted a ceasefire, referring to peace talks with the Taliban in Doha.
President Ghani emphasized that although Afghanistan faces many challenges, the government's first and foremost priority is to achieve peace.
He praised the United Nations' support for Afghanistan in talks with the Taliban and thanked the agency for calling for a general ceasefire.
President Ghani added: "The role of the United Nations, our partners and our international partners is very important to us as our negotiators face the Taliban in Doha."
According to him, the Afghan people have a clear and urgent priority in these talks: "It is a ceasefire, the immediate end of violence gives us a better chance of progress than anything else."
But President Ghani added: "For lasting peace in Afghanistan, we must address the root causes of terrorism as a global problem and a threat that has set our region on fire."
According to him, the hidden suffering of the Afghan people over the past 40 years by women and children underscores the importance of the UN Charter and its half-hearted commitment to international security and peace.
He called on the 192 members of the UN General Assembly to work together for the establishment of a national sovereignty, unity and democratic Afghanistan.
