Sources in the British government have acknowledged that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has convened an emergency session of parliament next week to discuss the changing situation in Afghanistan.

The date and time of the meeting will be discussed with the Speaker of the British Parliament, the source said.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the meeting as the Taliban reached the outskirts of the Afghan capital, Kabul, and said face-to-face talks were under way with the Afghan government on a peaceful transfer of power.

The United Kingdom announced two days ago that it would send seven troops to Afghanistan to help evacuate its citizens, diplomatic staff and Afghans who had worked with the British.

Meanwhile, Dominic Robb, chairman of the British Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, has criticized Foreign Secretary Dominic Robb for remaining silent on the Taliban's progress in Afghanistan.

"The current situation in Afghanistan is a tragedy and a shame for British foreign policy," Tom Taggart told

He says British officials are engaged in petty discussions with NATO allies, but the lives and destiny of tens of millions of civilians in Afghanistan are not as important.
